I was curious about how exactly Lady Gaga manages to find all these outlandish pieces and then this website (which I LOVE) http://cyanatrendland.com/ had all the answers for me!

She has a collective - a creative team called Haus of Gaga. From dancers to makeup to stylists, they articulate her vision and make her Gaga-fied.

Sabine Pieper Fashion Illustrations.

So I just changed my profile pic to one of her illustrations and wish I could use several. They are all beautiful. It was a toss-up between what I chose and the one I’ve just posted… And all the others. I love her use of texture and media.

She is a German artist living and working in Berlin. A place that is on my “next places to visit in Europe” list.

Yesterday I heard a rumour that Gareth Pugh will replace McQueen as the head of the brand. And although he seems like a logical fit (tortured artist, very dark, strong and similar design POV, English) I am reminded of an interview that FT did with McQueen… maybe 2 years ago? Where he explicitly said that when he dies, the brand dies with him.

I guess we’ll see if anyone else remembers his wishes.

Jay-Z + Absolut.

I am definitely not using this medium to plug the work I do (or TBWA does rather) for the sake of plugging it. BUT I think what Absolut is doing is phenomenal. So far they have had Spike Jonze do a short film, a photo shoot with Ellen Von Unwerth, Kate Beckinsale and Zooey Deschanel, and NOW they are doing a concert series, including making short films with the artists. The first one features Jay-Z. yay!

They are doing all of this because they believe “Creativity leads to Superiority”.

Please note the absence of huge logos and repetitive brand reference.

Awesome.

The YouDesign Movement

I just finished reading this fantastic article by the NY Times on (what Trendwatching calls out as a key trend in our 2010+ decade) The YouDesign Movement.

The movement consists of companies who draw their inspirations and dollars from crowdsourcing designs. For example, you can create a T-shirt and publish it on one of these sites and see if people want to buy it. If they do, the company will produce it!

This “community” business model has been very successful in many different areas and is now taking off in the world of fashion. Here are some examples:

http://www.threadless.com/ Is a Chicago based T-Shirt business that started in 2000 with $500. In 2005 the company was worth $6.2 Million.

http://www.dreamheels.com/ Is a Canadian shoe company that asks consumers to submit designs that can be printed onto a standardized white high-heeled pump.

http://catwalkgenius.com/ Is an Irish Web site that asks fashion fans to buy shares in up-and-coming designers, is all for crowdfunding but its designers keep creative control of their work (picture featured of their homepage).

Oh right. This is the best place to work.

Not new news but I thought I should follow-up on my looking into work places that are better than Google (their office in Zurich is currently the 4th best place to work). This wins by a whole lot.

In January of last year approx. 34,000 people applied for the job of island caretaker for the islands of the Great Barrier Reef off of Queensland, Australia. And some guy Ben won. He gets to explore the island and then blog about it. I hate him. Here is his itinerary, you can follow what he’s doing and sob to yourself in your pod. Well… that’s what I’m doing.

The first ever “Open Source” restaurant has opened in Amsterdam this month. The clever people from instructables.com have created a live forum for people to come in for a meal and learn how to make everything from the food they just ate to the chairs on which they sat.

This live interface is part of a funny new trend that is bringing people back together… genius! Like 4 squares, it is using the web to link people together and then they meet up in real life. What a concept.
